Red Apron is a program conducted through Pea Ridge High School to help include Special Education students in the Culinary pathway. This program has two days a month set aside to be able to go into Mrs. Jacobs' culinary kitchen to learn how to cook and make fun treats. With this being the start of the new year Red Apron has started off with some easier recipes but as they continue on through the school year the recipes will slowly become more challenging.
In Mrs. Brouse's experience she has learned that while the students are learning how to cook they are also learning new social skills. One new social skill in particular is the returning Red Apron students are able to help mentor the newer, first time students. Mrs. Brouse is looking forward to the next Red Apron Day and cannot wait to see continued growth in her students. Her favorite part is being able to see the change this program has been able to make. Haven is a Special Education student who has specifically been noticed to have been brought out by the program and has said that she really enjoyed the first day and that it was good.
Some other student mentors have said that Red Apron has helped them get out of their comfort zone and help with something bigger then just themselves. By helping Special Education students get involved with the culinary pathway, it has not only introduced to them to new experiences but also introduced them to new people.
Overall, Red Apron has helped students build life long friendships and experiences. It has given students a safe space to explore new things in the culinary pathway. Through the culinary pathway we hope to make each student feel included and needed. We strive to make each Red Apron project better then the last!
